Stark House: A Bold Statement in Residential Architecture

Park + Associates Pte Ltd's Stark House: A Refreshing Response to Context

Stark House, an architectural marvel by Park + Associates Pte Ltd, challenges traditional notions of blending with the neighbourhood character. Instead, it offers a critical response to context, resulting in a unique and welcoming structure.

The inspiration behind Stark House lies in the desire to break away from architectural norms and exclusivity. The architects believe in responding critically to the context, rather than conforming to the status quo. This approach has led to the creation of a structure that is both refreshing and inclusive, a welcome addition to its environment.

Stark House stands out due to its unique features and design philosophy. The architects have maximised the site's porosity to showcase the surrounding greenery. The structural elements of the house are deliberately exposed, eliminating architectural distractions and highlighting the concept of 'Structure as Architecture'. This design approach reflects the human desire to be unique and different.

The house is constructed using off-form concrete, custom micro-cement, clear sealant, and cement plaster. The site area is 900 sqm, and the built area is 600 sqm. The design tags associated with Stark House include concrete, off-form, and stark.

The site's natural topography and mature trees at the rear were utilised to plan the house. Stark House turns away from the front, facing the rear where the greenery provides a private sanctuary. The basement nook, combined with the outdoor swimming pool, becomes the focal point of family activities and outdoor entertainment.

The design project, which took 15 months, was carried out in Singapore. The team faced the challenge of planning the house to utilise the site's natural topography and mature trees. The result is a house that faces the green sanctuary at the rear, providing privacy and a connection with nature.

Stark House has received positive responses from neighbours, who find its contrasting architecture refreshing and rejuvenating for the estate. The design was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020, recognising its outstanding and trendsetting creation that advances art, science, design, and technology.
